I recently found this 1980 VW MKI - Rabbit- Pickup- Caddy- Sportruck or whatever you choose to call it on Fb marketplace and to be honest, I’m in love. Well not really, but I’ve always had a thing for these little fwd trucks, and that red and white with gold BBS wheels does get my juices flowing.  But what lies underneath the hood of this one? A little NA diesel perhaps?

Is that a... 20v 1.8T? Dun..dun...dunnnnnnn

Of all the VW engines in all the world, they had to choose this one. In typical Fb marketplace fashion there are no details in the ad so I am not sure which 1.8T is in there. I wonder if you could fit a VR6 in one of these, I know you could in the MKII. As long as the coil packs and turbo are functioning correctly, this could be a sweet ride.

I know most people here will agree that $10,000 is total CP territory, but Caddies typically bring a premium over the other MKIs. W hen I was looking at buying one 3-4 years ago I saw ones in terrible condition with rotten floors and strut towers still selling for $3-5k and this is in great condition as far as Caddys go.

What does Oppo think of the Caddy?

I thought “Sport Ruck” was a Jeep Comanche thing. I’ve spent some time in a diesel Caddy. They aren’t without their charms, but I can’t imagine spending $10k on one.

you can totally vr6 these, and in fact there is a company called eurowise that makes a drop-in setup for them. basically buy the full wiring harness, engine, mounts, etc straight from them.

In good ole VW fashion, just giant legos.

I love it. I had a friend in Houston who swapped a GTI engine into one of those. Talk about a sleeper.

I’d call $2k “CP Territory.”

My dad had an ‘82 Rabbit that he bought new and my brother and I drove it all over the place.

I have a Rabbit-Truck memory: On the interstate, back around 1984, back in the Tidewater Area of Virginia, I passed one of these little pickups and Hubby, around 28 years old, was driving. An Old Lady in her 80s was in the passenger seat and Hubby’s body language said he was being very attentive to the woman in the passenger seat. In the bed of the vehicle, sitting back against the rear wall of the passenger compartment, was a woman of about 28 years of age, hair being blown to oblivion, and having a very unhappy look on her face. I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess that buying that miserable vehicle was not her idea.
